About us
In the heart of Antwerp, on the Suikerrui a few steps from the Cathedral and the Scheldt, you will find Restaurant Maritime. The house has been part of the city since 1958. Mussels and fish are the speciality of this classic, warm-hearted restaurant, where a genuine welcome and attentive service are always on the menu. Our wine list offers a wide choice of bottles that pair beautifully with seafood. Burgundy is our coup de coeur, but Bordeaux, Tuscany and Spain are generously represented too.
The emphasis is on wines that match seafood.
It all began with Christiane Van de Voorde, who took over what was then Cafe Maritime at the age of twenty-six. For a “joeng maske” — Antwerp dialect for a young woman — that was no obvious step in those days. It did not take long before half chickens and pots of mussels were flying across the counter. Most guests came straight off the Flandria boats and arrived by the busload. The place was sometimes so full that plates and pots were passed from table to table by the guests themselves.
The business was later continued by her sons, and then by her grandsons.
In early 2024 the restaurant passed into the hands of Serge Verboven and Helena De Ridder, who already run the Antwerp classics Au Vieux Port and Restaurant Marcel.

Menu
Restaurant Maritime has been known for years for its mussels and its fish — and not least for its shrimp croquettes. Seafood platters, oysters and lobster hold a prominent place on our menu. For the carnivores among you there is always a good piece of meat in the house, and during the game season we carve pheasant and hare at your table. Whether you come for a romantic dinner for two, a business lunch or a relaxed evening with friends, there is always something to your taste.

Wine list
Serge Verboven has long held a deep-rooted passion for fine wine. It is no coincidence that the wine lists of Marcel and Au Vieux Port have repeatedly been honoured with prestigious awards. Since 2019 Marcel has enjoyed the recognition of Wine Spectator, which crowned its selection with two glasses, and Star Wine List and The World of Fine Wine have discovered and appreciated our lists as well.
With the wine list of Restaurant Maritime we intend to follow the same path.
With more than 200 carefully chosen references, our list sketches a rich palette of flavours and traditions. The emphasis is on wines that match seafood, drawn from a range of regions — with classic areas such as Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Piedmont and Tuscany naturally not forgotten. Our wines are fairly priced, with a fine selection offered at up to €70, and there are always interesting wines available by the glass.
Beyond the quality of the wine itself, we care about the experience of drinking it. Our finest wines are always served in Grassl and Spiegelau glasses, which lift the tasting to a higher level. Our sommelier Jens De Ridder, who gained his experience above all at the well-known Restaurant Pazzo, is always ready to guide you through the rich landscape of wines that Maritime has to offer.
